‘Boys Only’ - Ballet Boys in Birmingham

Many thanks to our Dancing Dad, Tim for contributing this article.

The Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) has an excellent programme of dance education, providing opportunities for children and young people who do ballet, but are not full-time ballet students to experience teaching from professional ballet dancers.

Recently, together with the RAD and funded through money raised by the Billy Elliot musical gala, they ran a ‘Boys Only’ ballet session and videos from the day are now online.

The day was themed around the ballet, Hobson’s Choice and the class was taught by Robert Parker and Iain Mackay, both principal dancers of the BRB. Robert will be taking up a post as Artistic Director of Elmhurst School for Dance in Birmingham during 2012.

Over 50 boys took part on the day. Both the older (direct link)

and younger boys (direct link)

seemed to enjoy the day and a report of the session also featured on the BBC News (direct link):

It’s great to see a major ballet company and the RAD show such commitment to getting more boys involved in ballet and this is something that BoysDoBallet.com applaud.

There is another boys only session in Birmingham on February 12th, 2012 and you can find all the details and see other such opportunities from the BRB on their website.
