Gifts for ballet dancing boys

[EDIT: How about a personalized badge or fridge magnet for under $2? Click here.]

What do you buy as a present for a boy who does ballet?

Books and DVDs are a great idea and we will soon be starting a regular feature reviewing books/DVDs which boy dancers have enjoyed. Until then, one DVD guaranteed to be a winner is Born to be Wild - a documentary which looks at 4 dancers at American Ballet Theatre.

The DVD features interviews with the dancers, rehearsal footage and classical and contemporary performances. Available from Amazon by clicking here (NB this is an American format DVD).

Another A* DVD is Peter and the Wolf, danced by the Royal Ballet School. I think this production is the only commercially available performance by the Royal Ballet School and it really is very good - and excellently choreographed by Matthew Hart. Peter is played by a boy (an excellent David Johnson) and boys also feature as the hunters and the wall. The wolf is danced by a young professional and Grandfather is played by Anthony Dowell. Available from Amazon UK by clicking here (NB The DVD also features a performance of L'enfant et les sortil├Ęges by the Netherlands Dance Theatre).

One good site to look at is www.balletgifts.com (UK based). They have some items which would be super for boys including:

Spartacus t-shirts

They were selling these at Covent Garden during the Bolshoi season this year and they looked fab.

Bolshoi rugby shirts

All the text is in Russian script which is quite fun - looks like code. Click here. In this same range there are also tank tops, hoodies, sweat shirts, caps, tracksuits and tote bags. To see the lot click here.

Belinda the Ballet Bear in Don Quixote

Younger boys might enjoy this t-shirt featuring a dancing male bear. Click here.

Various model nutcrackers

These come in an assortment of sizes from key-rings to fridge magnets to the full 15 inches. To see the range click here.

Our final recommendation for the moment are posters from the gift shop at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

The children's gift range at ROH is VERY weak for boys, and one of the reasons we started this site. Lots of pink, ribbons and girls.

They do, however, sell some terrific posters featuring male dancers in striking poses. They have a limited range on the Internet but I recommend you visit in person if possible to browse their range. If you cannot drop in, you might have some success in ringing through to see if they have more items available than listed on their website.

Visit their site by clicking here.

Please add any of your own success stories in the comments.

  1. Great suggestions thank you. Am always getting asked by relatives what my son would like for birthday/Christmas etc that could be ballet related and I am often at a loss so will pass these ideas on gladly! Love the idea of the Bolshoi rugby shirt particularly - very unique!

  2. Just to add, after reading this I ordered the poster shown above from ROH and it came the next day. It's now on my son's wall and he loves it - will be good for when his friends come round as it shows a very strong male physique, as opposed to the image people have in their heads of ballet dancers as female and wearing pink tutus!

I also ordered the Royal Ballet calendar and it has some lovely pictures of male dancers (eg Carlos Acosta) - great for our boys to write the dates of their lessons/performances etc.

  3. Fabulous, just what I have been looking for. Both my daughter and son love ballet and it is a very difficult balance encouraging her love of the pinkness and girliness and his of the discipline and strength. I can't wait to order some of these to see his face.
