Character Dance 2

Here is another fine example of character dance. It is the polonaise and mazurka from Paquita. What makes this version of the ballet exceptional is that it is danced entirely by young students from the Vaganova Academy. This clip was filmed at a gala performed by the Mariinsky Ballet at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

The polonaise and mazurka are both dances in three time. The polonaise has a running quaver/semi-quaver rhythm while the mazurka has a dotted rhythm - if you listen can carefully you can hear the change:
